JAMES L. OAKES
Retired carpenter, Army vet was union rep, Mason James L. Oakes, 690 River Road, Delaware Township, passed
away at 6:52 a.m. Monday morning (2-14-05) in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 95. Mr. Oakes was born July 16, 1909, on
Pansy Road in Springfield Township, to James and Rhoda Schell Oakes. For 26 years he was a representive of Local 1000 of
the Carpenters union, Greenville; and Local 1658, Grove City. He retired in October 1974. He was of the Protestant faith. An
Army veteran, Mr. Oakes served at the 70th Station Hospital during World War II. He was a member of Free and Accepted
Mason Hebron Lodge 575, Coolspring Township; Scottish Rites New Castle Consistory; Zem Zem Shrine of Syria Temple, Erie; Mercer
County Shrine Club; American Legion Post 140, Greenville; Stony Point Grange 1694, Delaware Township; and Indendent Order
of Odd Fellows Lodge 739, Sharpsville. His wife, the former Stella Irvine Eshbaugh, whom he married in May 1946, passed
away June 11, 1990. Surviving are eight step-grandchildren and a number of stepgreat-grandchildren. Besides his wife,
Mr. Oakes was preceded in death by his parents; two stepdaughters, Adelia Regal and Kathryn Galus; a stepson, James "Bud"
Eshbaugh; two sisters, Laura Chestnut and FrancesDyer; a brother, Clyde Oakes and a stepgranddaughter, Lola Ames.
