Jonas & Maria Schell Wedding Day 3-15-1870

DEFOREST WOMEN IS 85 ON DEC. 4
Mrs. Maria J. Schell
Mrs. Maria Jane Schell of Deforest who will celebrate her 85th birthday Dec. 4., she was born in Franklin, PA. Her early girlhood years was spent on a farm in Lawrence Co. and her belief is that man can live closer to God in the county than in the city.
When she was 16 years of age Mrs. Schell was united with the Presbyterian Church and until the last few years she has been active and interested worker in the church.
Her hobby is the piecing of quilts and as she unable to handle the Heavy quilting she quilts each block and joins them together.
The Bible is her favorite book and she is also interested reader of  The Tribune, especially of the editorials.
In recalling the Civil War days, Mrs. Schell said that only old men were left to carry on the work and the calico was 50 cents a yard and hard to get at any price. One change of clothing was all that people had, she said.
She was married to Jonas Schell  in Wheatland, PA, who passed away 18 years ago in Leesburg, Mercer County, PA. where she made her home until coming to live with her son, William Schell, at Deforest. Five children were born to them three of whom are living. She has 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Schell says that the present is a much better time to live than when she was a girl.
